Adlestrop, the Cotswolds
page heading

Adlestrop

Adlestrop is an archetypal Cotswold village built in the famous mellow stone, with its' cottage gardens and quiet beauty and quite possibly most famous for its literary connections.

Yes, I remember Adelstrop -

The name, because one afternoon

Of heat the express train drew up there

Unwontedly. It was late June

Adlestrop is set in the Evenlode valley this pretty village close to the Oxfordshire border has been immortalised in poetry by Edward Thomas in 1914.  Unfortunately he never got the opportunity to come back to visit his beloved Adlestrop, he died in battle in 1917.

The literary connection continues, Jane Austen was a regular visitor to her uncle at Adlestrop House in the 19th century.  Literary fans have long discussed whether or not  or not recollections of her visits to Adelstrop gave  substance to some of her novels.
