Fairford
One of the most easterly towns of the Cotswolds, Fairford has numerous claims to fame.
Founder of the Oxford Movement, the revival of theology, John Keble was born in Keble House, Fairford in 1792. John Keble was one of the first to obtain a double first at Oxford in Classics and Mathematics at the early age of 18. An achievement that was honoured by naming an Oxford College in his memory.
On the south side of Fairford is the air base, established during the Second World War (1939-1945), and subsequently home to Concorde test runs and latterly a USAF base, also the designated European landing base for the Space shuttle. The air base now plays host to the Annual Air Tattoo in July of each year.
There is weekly outdoor market held every Wednesday and a host of pubs, inns, cafes and restaurant to take time out for a coffee or lunch.
Rail enthusiasts may like to know that in 1873 the East Gloucester Rail Company opened a branch line from Witney. The Old Fairford Flyer took just over 1 hour to cover the 21 mile journey!!
St Mary's Parish Church , built in 15th & 16th centuries can boast to be the only church in England to have retained its complete set of medieval stained glass windows - truly worth a visit!
