Tetbury

St Mary's is the original church and has a number of decorative Gothic features, tall windows, panelled galleries and candelabra and a number of boxed pews.   The box pews were used by the rich inhabitants of the town and consequently took up so much room that the townsfolk built another church - St Saviours - for the poorer people of the town.

 

Built on a  hill there are a number of interesting streets, why not take a stroll down the ancient street known as Chipping Steps which leads down to the River Avon then make your way back up Gumstool Street where traditionally the Spring Bank Holiday Woolsack races are held.  Do be polite in the Tourist Information Centre as this also houses a Police Bygoines mueseum with cells and a fine collection of handcuffs and truncheons.  

 

Just south of Tetbury discover the beautiful Westonbirt Arboretum  a real treat in the autumn but worthy of visit any time of the year.
