Winchcombe
The most amazing Cotswold town of Winchcombe once the capital of Mercia and the site of a great Benedictine Abbey, mostly now associated with Sudeley Castle. The buildings of town are mostly 16th century and are worthy of more than a cursory glance in this beautiful town.
The 15th century perpendicular Church of St Peter with its famous gruesome gargoyles some 60 or 70 of them. The church houses a piece of embroidery said to be the work of Catherine of Aragon, first wife of Henry VIII, and not the only link to Henry VIII in this town.
Sudeley Castle is the last resting place of Queen Katharine Parr, the only one of Henry VIII wives to outlive him.
The Chandos Almhouses are a beautiful row of Almhouses originally built in 1573 to house 12 poor women of the town, the were subsequently rebuilt in the 19th century.
The Town Hall houses both the Tourist Information Centre and the Winchcombe Folk and Police Museum. The stocks with their 7 holes pose a question about whether these were built with a one legged man in mind?
There are a number of good walks around Winchcombe, you can visit Belas Knapp a neolithic burial site, just 2 to 3miles from Winchcombe town centre.
