Nailsworth in the Cotswolds
page heading

Nailsworth

A true Cotswold town built at the junction of two valleys.  Consequently some of the side streets within town are rather steep - perhaps the steepest being aptly named  Nailsworth Ladder.

The town has managed rather well the change from wool town and all that entailed to a modern centre.  There are a number of unused cloth mills which have been converted to workshops for local artisans.

There are a number of outstanding historic buildings, a row of beautiful cottages opposite the Clothiers Arms.  Stoke Croft,  keep a look out for 17th century house with an oval window a regular feature in this part of the country.  You will also find a 17th century Quaker Meeting House nearby.

Nearby in the village of Woodchester there is a very good example in the remains of a Roman mosaic pavement, the largest mosaic floor- some 14 square feet, ever found in Britain and it is thought it would have been the size of the room within the villa.  The mosiac itself features Orpheus playing his lyre and surrounded by wild animals.
