St James Church, Chipping Campden, North Cotswolds
Chipping Campden is rightly described as 'The Jewel of the Cotswolds'. St. James' church is the most glorious building in this 'Jewel' and the setting for our seventh annual Music Festival.

As always a great deal of the last six months has been spent in discussion with some of the world’s most pre s t i g i o u s musicians and their agents. Artistically 2008 was a hard act to follow but I hope you will agree that we have another exciting programme for you in 2009. As always we see the re t u rn of some artists from previous years alongside musicians new to Chipping Campden festival.

First time visitors include the great pianist Stephen Kovacevich, the m a s t e rful Florestan piano trio, acclaimed vocal ensemble Tenebrae and the magnificent young soprano, Kate Royal. We a re delighted to welcome back The Nash Ensemble, Florilegium, Piers Lane, The Pavel Haas quartet, Lawrence Power, Michael Collins and, of course, our festival president Paul Lewis.

2008 saw the formation of the ‘Chipping Campden Festival Academy Orchestra’ and we were both delighted by the quality of the playing and overwhelmed by the audience and critics’ response to the project. The quality of the orchestra was, in no small measure, due to the outstanding musicianship of conductor Thomas Hull and the sheer hard work he put in to selecting the players. Once again the ‘ Trainee’ members of the Academy will be joined on a 50/50 basis by experienced orchestral musicians.

I am pleased to announce that we have another great lineup of soloists who have agreed to perf o rm with the Academy. 2009 sees three important musical anniversaries- the 350th of Purc e l l ’s birth, the 250th of Handel’s death and the 200th of Haydn’s death, all of which are reflected in our programming.
