Cirencester

Cirencester, credited as the second largest town of Roman Britain known as 'Corinium' and only London is credited as being larger.  Built on the intersection of 3 major Roman roads; Fosse Way, Akerman Street and Ermin Street, accredited by Ptolemy in his Geography works dated 150AD

Cirencester still enjoys the reputation of being the largest of the truly Cotswolds towns.  A walking tour of the town is essential to appreciate both the architectural splendour of the buildings, not least of all the church, with its fine collection of rare treasure.

 

Another key centre for the woollen trade, the wool merchants were the main befactors in developing this outstanding church, larger than some cathedrals and acknowledged as the largest Parish Church in England.

Description

 

A true Cotswold market town, with markets held twice during the week in the market place.  There are a number of stunning building all worth a glance.  The victorian Corn Hall is still used for antique and flea markets, The Bear Inn is a classic timber framed house complete with nodding gables and you will almhouses in Thomas Street these were originally set up in the 15th century for destitute weavers.  To discover all you need to know about Roman times in Cirencester then do visit The Corinium Museum in Park Street.
